             Canvassing Old Town's financial district
During the public meeting in front of the Planning Commission
a challenge was presented fm an opponent of the Safe Haven
shelter. It challenged the validity of the commission member's
decision to approve the special use permit #2007-0002.
The opposition based the challenge on the supposed intimidation
of business owners wary to the shelter being in the financial
district in Old Town. Accusations where made that the City of
Alexandria had achieved the silencing of a great number of
citizens responsible for bring capital in through increased
inspections. These are among the many things our City enforces
to protect its citizens.
We all know that the government has their tricks, so
Ipropose that we get together and ask the businesses ourselves.
Then we can discover the truth for ourselves and inform the
community. In the mean time I invite all to join me for Food
NOT Bombs to share the good news with out local nomads on the
streets of Old Town. A volunteer and my self are getting the
food and some supplies from my place then we are heading
downto Old Town between 7 and 8PM. That's going on TONIGHT.
Check us out on Myspace as AVA~FOOD NOT BOMBS~ and watch the
videoof the March 6th meeting at City Hall at
http://alexandriava.gov. Check is out because we had some
awesome speakers come out whose words woke that room up after
hours of speeches and testimonials. Can you guess who they where?
The Alexandria Gazette Packet had a very dry article about the meeting on its front page March 8th. Im working on wash Post publishing a good article.

If not you then who?
If not now then when?

Religious protest marches from Cathedral to White House, hundreds of arrests

Late evening on Friday, March 16, over 3,000 people gathered in Washington Cathedral for a service, and then marched down Mass Ave towards the White House, looking like a sea of fireflies with electric "candles' held high. On arrival at the White House, hundreds were arrested an a planned civil disobedience

The number of CD participants was so high that CD participants had to be organized by a system of numbers! The cops had stated they could only handle 100 at a time, and the religious peace focused organizers agreed to that request.

Arrests finally totaled 222 according to the AP wire service reports.

This kind of protest coming from the Cathedral has not been seen in DC since 1991, on the Sunday prior to the start of the First Persian Gulf War! On that night, the cathedral was packed too, just like on March 16 this year. That night, another candlelight procession left the Cathedral and went to the White House-at that time, closing a normally-open to traffic Penn Ave, which protestors closed almost every night for the first two weeks of that war.

Maybe we will finally start to see people banging drums in Lafayette Park every night as well, like we did in Gulf War I to Daddy Bush's everlasting complaint?

SDS/Shield Bloc faces stun grenade, pre-emptive arrests

The anti-authoritarian Bloc met ferocious police resistance at the Pentagon, followed by 2 pre-emptive arrests on our return to DC during a bike cop blitz.

The bloc had more shields this time, but fewer activists as the ANSWER march was smaller than the UFPJ march in January. A couple hundred people simply cannot repeat the results of a 700 person bloc in January, even with more and better equipment.

Everyone got around several police lines meant to funnel protestors into the Pentagon parking lot, only to meet far more determined opposition at the third line of cops.

On the street leading to the Pentagon, by the sign announcing the exit for the River Entrance, riot cops with shields faced off against shield-bearing protestors.

As everyone set a tight formation and advanced on the riot cops with shields in front, a shot rang out. It was a stun grenade of some type, and one person was struck in the face by burning non-metallic shrapnel from it (interview in pending audio).

People retreated only a few feet-and quickly tightened back up and re-advanced. Nobody panicked, and the weapon failed to drive off the shield bloc!

A few short pulse charges gained no headway, and then things simply stabilized into a waiting game while ANSWER speeches rang out from below and (hopefully) resonated through the halls of the Pentagon.

As the ANSWER rally drew to a close, everyone decided to return to DC and continue action in DC, on better-known terrain with better cover.

As soon as everyone finished crossing back over Memorial Bridge, several squads of bike cops charged into the bloc, jumping off their bikes to tackle two people.

These two arrests appeared to be a pre-planned strategy to kill the bloc by suspected "leaders" of SDS on any available charge. Nobody was able to find out at the

scene what the charges were, but the only one I can think of is JAYWALKING!

As everyone swarmed around those cops to demand the release of the arrestees, the cops called in
massive reinforcements of motorcycle and other cops to box everyone in.

Although there was a regrouping point to meet back up and continue to further protest targets, nobody had the energy left to use it and things wound down at that point.

No doubt this was the police department's intention, so as to protect targets like every military recruiter in town, every pro-war corporate lobbyist, and so on. As SDS asked in VA, Who do they serve? Who do they protect? Certainly not people fed up with war and government aggression at home and abroad!

BTW, all those "eagles" that were posting threats turned out to be a bunch of hot air. They yelled and yelled and may have gotten physical with some pacifists (unconfirmed report they did), but refused to engage heavy, shield-bearing anarchist units even when invited to put their money where their mouths were!

All the arrestees have been released and all charges dropped.

The director of the film said this:
"We wanted to urgently remind audiences that through just one cup of coffee, we are inextricably connected to the livelihoods of millions of people around the world who are struggling to survive. Coffee is a universal experience enjoyed by billions of people on a daily basis and is part of an industry worth over $80 billion a year. But the people behind the product are in crisis with millions of growers fast becoming bankrupt. Nowhere more evident is this paradox than in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Our hope was to make a film that forced us, as western consumers, to question some of our basic assumptions about our consumer lifestyle and its interaction with the rest of the world." -www.blackgoldmovie.com

Starbucks in Ethiopia coffee row

Starbucks says it has programmes in place to help farmers
US coffee chain Starbucks is denying Ethiopia earnings of £47m ($88m) a year, according to Oxfam.
The UK charity says Starbucks asked the National Coffee Association (NCA) to block the country's bid to trademark three types of coffee bean in the US. Oxfam says poor farmers would have benefited from the move but the NCA says there is no economic case to support the charity's claims. Starbucks denies initiating opposition to the trademark application. 'Backwards step' The Ethiopian government filed its applications to trademark its most famous coffee bean names - Sidamo, Harar and Yirgacheffe - in US courts last year.
This particular scheme is going to hurt the Ethiopian coffee farmers economically

Oxfam claims that Starbucks flagged up the application to the NCA - of which the firm is a leading member. The NCA then filed its opposition at the US Patent and Trademark Office. Oxfam's Phil Bloomer said the charity had worked with Starbucks in the past and appealed to the firm to "act responsibly". "Their behaviour on this occasion is a huge backwards step and raises serious questions about the depth of their commitment to the welfare of their suppliers," he said. Berhanu Kebede, Ethiopia's ambassador to the UK, said in a statement that the international community should support the country's efforts to ensure farmers got a fair reward for their hard work. "This campaign has a pivotal role in redressing the unfairness of the international trading system," he said. 'Reduce demand' Starbucks' senior vice-president of coffee procurement, Dub Hay, denied approaching the NCA to oppose the Ethiopian move. "We did not get the NCA involved - in fact it was the other way around, they contacted us." Robert Nelson, head of the NCA, backed Mr Hay's claim, adding that his organisation opposed the Ethiopian move for economic reasons. "For the US industry to exist, we must have an economically stable coffee industry in the producing world," he said. "This particular scheme is going to hurt the Ethiopian coffee farmers economically." He claimed that the Ethiopian government was being badly advised, and the move would price them out of the market. The trademark move would also reduce demand for the country's coffee, he said. Oxfam said the NCA and Starbucks should not dictate to Ethiopia how best to sell its products.

The United States Presidential election of 2008 will be held on November 4, 2008. The election will determine electors for the United States Electoral College, and whichever presidential candidate receives a majority of votes in the Electoral College (at least 270) will be the 44th President of the United States. If no candidate receives a majority in the Electoral College then the president-elect is selected by a vote of the House of Representatives. As in the 2004 Presidential election, the allocation of electoral votes to each state will be partially based on the 2000 Census. The president-elect will be inaugurated on Tuesday, January 20, 2009.

AVA Food Not Bombs would be a lot more effective if we served the public once a week @ LEAST. It could be done if interested people got in contact with one another and I, Jessica Miller, to arrange a time, day and location to get err done. I have found that peoples weekends are usually open and some of the more dedicated/passionate folks are only free a day or two during the week. It is my belief that those with the same free days or hours can get together and make a free meal happen. Call (703) 909 6655 . Email jmiller7499@email.vccs.edu. After receiving a very large donation from a certain health food store Alexandria's chapter of Food Not Bombs was able to redistribute 14 boxes of food and 6 cases of vitamin water. The total amount of food we received is unknown but we do know that we got around $1,500 worth of Vitamin Water. Even thought the food was given to Food Not Bombs doesn't mean it didn't go to waste. Shocking I know, yet it is TRUE!

11 loafs of bread
 20 muffins
 6 bags of green peas
1 box of tofu Sour Cream
4 bags of shitake mushrooms            ALL TRASHED DUE TO LACK
3 boxes of pizza bagels                               OF FREEZER SPACE!
 1 box of garden burgers
2 spinach and mushroom pizzas 5/16/06  Jessica, Ryan and Hanna had someone call the cops on us for drawing with street chalk in the dry fountain at Market Square. Jess's charge was changed from trespassing to defacing public property. The trial resulted in the judge asking for 24 hours of community service and all charges will be dropped.  Wow what a waste of tax payer’s money. Jessica does community service on the regular. She has even been given the authority to sign off on others community service hours and does. Unfortunately the cop lied about someone calling him on us and nothing could be done because Ryan and Hanna did not show up for the trial. We need solidarity people and there is not excuse that will excuse you for letting a friend and justice down. 2/7/06 Our beloved Tarry will be facing jail time for sitting at a STARBUCKS after getting a coffee. He do anything wrong and should not have to face all those court fees to get justice after fighting for the very "DEMOCRACY" that decided dress code was important enough to suspend TARY'S right. HELP TARY BY BOYCOTTING THE STARBUCKS IN OLD TOWN BY THE WATER. Feel free to BOYCOT all Starbucks until Tray’s case is dismissed and his charges cleared and given a FREE cup off coffee. Or all free coffee until the day he can drink no more. If you support this show the love. Call Jessica with Food Not Bombs or come to Old Town on Sunday. Free Food. Volunteering. Freegan Fun. Life is not and there is injustice occurring and guess what..... APATHY IS NOT JUST NOT CARING IT IS CHOOSING NOT TO DO OR SAY ANYTHING.   11/1/05  Today Senator George Allen, ex-governor of Vrigina/?08 republican candidate for president?, spoke to professors James Carville and Dr. Jim McClellan Topics in Politics class. He went on a good portion about the importance of the young generation of students to pursue areas in  Nanotechnology, Petroleum Engeinering,Geology,               Geophysics Engineer Technicians, Multi-skilled Maintenance Crafts, Geosciences, Production Operators, and Mechanical Engineering. He voiced his opposition of the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT and mentioned his value of standardized tests and promised support for: new methods for encouraging student’s interest in their education.  Ms. Haney, (D1A?) US\VA History teacher, confronted the Senator about the creative restraint felt on their material by the imposition of SOL tests and deadlines.  -George Allen's role models in history Thomas Jefferson(believed in wise and frugal government who would not take the restraint of man in the prevention of injury so far as to take the bread they have earned if it be rotten), Mark Twain (it is just as easy to judge others as it is easy as them to judge you.), and Reagan. LONG TERM GOALS=1.Oppertunity for all 2. More competitive American work force 3.Inovation Jessica Miller (05 Titan graduate, founder of C.A.U.S.E.) caught Virginia Senator George Allen after class to ask... *this was right after Justin(fellow foodnotbomber) had elegantly supported legalizing medical marijuana. Jess “What was your motivation in voting no on S.Amdt 784, which would work on improving national security by reducing dependence on foreign oil imports by 40% by 2025?" Allen(translated from political jargon to common English) "That sounds like one of the many idealist legislation with no realistic plan to carry it out, niceties." Jess “so what are your ideas on that?" Allen"Im for Domestic development...Conservation, and ...." Jess “So is your support for conservation the reason behind your vote for the opening of the Alaskan Nature Reserve?... How do you (representatively) exercise your recognition of the lack of future American service women and men in the very areas of industry you are prematurely developing with you expressed fears of growing foreign impact and control of US job market, weakening economy, and Scientific Innovation?... So you know all about the institutions of higher education catered for the natives(who just happen to be a minority population) and the availability of job training programs and scholarships provided by the Industry that will be exploiting their land? " Allen"yes, wait,no. That was to open the door for domestic development....ummmm....Ya that's all good stuff...I agree! Then his gang of suited men took his arm and announced that he had to go......"awww bed time already but I was just getting warmed up." *The Governor of a state has the power of a line item veto, WHICH carries with it the ability  to reduce wasteful budgets, careless spenders, and selfish pork barrel legislation. SO VOTE Awareness Fest 06’
Description:  A Collective Action United Student Energy, (CAUSE) event. CAUSE is T.C Williams High School political activism club. In hopes of creating events where people can be informed about important issues such as Environmental laws and Equal Rights, and also meet local lawyers and politicians
CAUSE’s goal is to introduce this information in a fun and pleasant manner, in order to appeal to high school students and local community members.
 Agenda:
We plan to have our event in T.C Williams High School auditorium, during late February.
We also plan to invite environmental groups, local community leaders, political speakers, and other social and political groups to hold tables. We also plan to hold audience to a political band or music of the sort.

P.R. plan:
We will hold this event as a club event. Under that we will publicize accordantly, with flyers and poster not only in school but in the local newspapers (finance allowing) and other schools (within guidelines).
 Financial plan:
In order to have this event we must finance it efficiently. In order to do so we must fundraise toughly. I propose that we hold a number of fundraising tactics, within the guidelines of the club and school. I feel that the best way to start is an animal friendly bake sale. I also feel that we should find some other ways to find funds.
